Giftaid For Rotary Swimarathon 2008

What Is Giftaid?

Giftaid is a relief granted by the Inland Revenue to assist Charities to raise additional funds. Charities can reclaim tax at standard rate on all donations or sponsorship received, provided the donor is a UK tax paying individual. The donor must provide the Charity with their name and address and agree that their donation or sponsorship is a gift aid donation.

The frequently asked Questions and Answers below should cover anything you need to know about Giftaid and how The Rotary Swimarathon organisers can administer the scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Q1. How can I increase my donation (or sponsorship) at no extra cost to myself?

A1. Confirm that you wish to make your donation (or sponsorship) under giftaid.

Q2.  How do I confirm that I wish to make my donation (or sponsorship) under giftaid?

A2. Complete your name, address and amount you are donating (or sponsoring) and then just tick the giftaid column on the swf Swimarathon sponsor form.

Q3. Why, what happens when I tick the Giftaid Box?

A3. With your agreement to donate (or Sponsor) under giftaid The Rotary Club of South Woodham Ferrers, (which is a registered Charity), can then reclaim 22/78ths of your donation from the Inland Revenue. This is in addition to the donation or (sponsorship) which you have made.

Q4. Who is eligible to make Giftaid donations (or sponsorship). Can all sponsors make Giftaid Donations (or sponsorship)?

A4. Only Individuals who are tax payers and who will pay an amount of income tax or capital gains tax, in the tax year, at least equal to the tax to be reclaimed on their donation (or sponsorship).

Q5. What happens if I am a Higher rate taxpayer?

A5. Donors (or sponsors) who are liable to the higher rate of tax of 40% can also claim the difference between the standard rate of 22% and the higher rate of 40% i.e. a further 18% relief would be available on the grossed up amount. To claim the higher rate relief the taxpayer would have to complete the appropriate section of their tax return.

So Will Giftaid Help The Rotary Swimarathon Event To Raise Funds?

Certainly. Other Rotary Swimarathon swimming teams have raised over £25,000 in team sponsorship last year. Assuming that half of the team sponsors were taxpayers and  had collected Giftaid they would have had another £3,525 to grant to local worthwhile causes.

Is It Worth All The Fuss?

The Rotary Club of South Woodham Ferrers and the Rotary Swimarathon Committee thinks it is.  Swimmers who have been getting and collecting sponsorship money from the local community should have  names and addresses as well as the amount of sponsorship. The only additional piece of information that we need is a tick in a box to indicate that you are a UK tax payer and you wish to make your donation (or sponsorship) a Giftaid donation. It's So Easy For You.

The SWFSwimarathon committee will do the rest.
